BROMPTON
Andrew Ritchie, a young engineer, envisioned a revolutionary urban transportation solution upon his arrival in London. In 1975, he created a bike with a unique 3-part fold in his flat, offering unparalleled mobility—a ‘magic carpet for the city’. Despite initial setbacks, Andrew persevered, refining his design over a decade, handcrafting each bike in a small workshop. In 1987, recognition came when Julian Vereker intervened, leading to Brompton’s triumphant debut at the Cyclex Bike Show.
Established at the Brentford Factory, Brompton began production, crafting 60 bikes a month with all-steel frames and optional 3 or 5-speed hub gears. By 1991, Brompton had expanded to 56 UK outlets and a growing export market, reflecting Andrew’s dedication to quality and fairness in pricing.
Today, the Brompton remains iconic, offering users a unique fold, space-saving design, and a sense of freedom in urban environments.
